Canadian mining company Balkan Resources is actively drilling at two separate license areas in Albania. With copper in the north, and nickel in the south, results are anticipated to initiate a resurrection of mining in Albania.
Copper deposits in the northern District of Mirdita were being actively mined until political changes in the 1990s left the mines dormant. Infrastructure exists, and the construction of the new Prishtina-Tirana will greatly facilitate transportation of ore to processing plants, and reduce local shipping times to Albanian ports. Copper was the focus of the Northern mines, and associated minerals such as gold and silver were not exploited. With current market prices, economic minerals associated with the VMS Copper hold the potential to unveil world class mines, and processing plants. Nickel deposits in the Central (Librazhd) and Southern (Devoll) Districts of Albania have also lain fallow since the political changes of the 1990s. Good mining infrastructure exists in these districts, and historic resource documentation shows the potential for many years of economic growth through these mining areas.
The Albanian Geological Society explored the country in a systematic fashion, compiling data from mapping, diamond drilling, and other sampling techniques. The quality of data is exceptional, and the geologists who compiled this data worked within strict guidelines that left uniform, complete records. This data remains in hand-drawn sections, and reserves calculated from polygonal methods. Balkan Resources sh.p.k. transforming this data into three dimensional models and assay databases to facilitate ore modeling, interpretation, extrapolation and geostatistical analysis. Mine planning and scheduling will follow, and the resulting product will be a NI 43-101 compliant document stating the Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves for each property.
With Albania's rich mining history, existing known reserves, and untapped potential, Albania should emerge as a world leader in base metal production, with Balkan Resources at the helm.
